As we enter a new year, it’s the perfect time to reflect on the standout moments and extraordinary events that made 2024 so impactful. From innovative launches to historic celebrations, this year’s events weren’t just gathering; they were transformative experiences. With rising expectations, planners have opportunities to innovate and deliver events that build communities and create lasting memories. Here are some highlights and trends shaping the future of events, shared by Megan Cumming, Senior Vice President of Events.
What are your favorite events, moments, or experiences from the year, and why?
There are so many to choose from! Each of our events had its unique flavor. However, I recall three that uniquely convened their audiences to create new ways to communicate unforgettable moments and showcase the incredible talent and vision behind the scenes.
UMD Xfoundry Launch—The launch of UMD’s Xfoundry was truly inspiring! This event used futuristic technology, including varying robots throughout, to highlight the power of its mission. It was a privilege to champion these forward-thinking innovators.
Capital’s 50 Fest—This event had everything: history, excitement, and a touch of rockstar energy! Celebrating this beloved Washington institution by stretching our creativity to bring the Capitals’ legacy to life was unforgettable. And let’s not forget the incredible backstage moments—getting up close to the Stanley Cup, hanging out with players, and dancing to Third Eye Blind made this event one for the books.
TNM on the National Mall – There’s always something magical about hosting an event on the National Mall. The setting alone is awe-inspiring, but for me, the magic is also in the logistics. Watching our team transform an open space into a fully functioning event venue is a masterclass in creativity and problem-solving and a true testament to the expertise and dedication of everyone involved.
What trends do you notice most that clients and attendees are requesting and enjoying?
I’ve noticed the trends of 2024 highlighting a shared focus on connection, personalization, and sustainability—values that resonate with our team and our clients.
- Sustainability and Social Responsibility – Sustainability remains a top priority, with clients and attendees demanding more eco-friendly and socially conscious practices. From adopting sustainable materials and reducing waste to aligning events with social causes, this trend reflects a broader commitment to environmental stewardship and the community.
- Connection to the Host City—Today’s attendees want to connect with the city they visit. Planners are increasingly encouraged to consider the “why” behind a chosen location and incorporate the local culture into the event experience to deepen the attendee’s experience and create a lasting connection to the host city.
- Increasing Integration of AI—AI, and automation have brought about a significant shift in the way events are planned and executed. These technologies have become indispensable tools for event planners, acting as “digital assistants” that streamline processes and enhance attendee engagement.
- Choose-Your-Own-Adventure Breakouts – Customization is key, and attendees want the ability to tailor their event experience to their interests. Breakout sessions offering multiple options empower attendees to manage their time and gain the tools and insights they can immediately implement. This trend prioritizes relevance and value.
- Vibrant Visuals: Bold Colors Take Center Stage—Muted tones and neutral palettes are out; bold, vibrant colors are in! This year, event designs embraced eye-catching hues that energize and inspire.
- Elevated Beverage and Menu Options – This year also saw a shift in food and beverage offerings, catering to diverse preferences and lifestyles and providing cost-saving opportunities through options like limited alcohol service, meat-free menus, and locally sourced specialties.
With the growth in sustainability, what are some of the best innovative approaches to meet this goal?
Sustainability has become a core focus shaping the planning and execution of gatherings. Here are a few sustainable practices I’ve seen this year:
Green Transportation Options—From offering all-hybrid vehicle options to selecting a centralized venue and partnering with a carbon-offsetting organization, green transportation strategies make it easier for participants to travel sustainably.
Plant-Based Menus – Caterers are crafting innovative and delicious plant-based menus, showcasing that sustainability doesn’t compromise flavor or creativity and supports cost-saving efforts.
Recycling and Repurposing Décor and Signage—Planners prioritize recyclable and reusable materials to minimize waste. By repurposing elements from past events, they reduce their environmental impact and showcase creative ways to give materials a second life.
Digital Everything—From agendas and signage to collateral and handouts, digital tools have replaced their paper counterparts. This shift significantly reduces waste and adds a layer of convenience for attendees, who can access everything they need on their devices.
What, in your opinion, are the most effective ways to create immersive, personalized experiences to strategically convene attendees in the future?
As the events industry evolves, a constant remains creating truly immersive and personalized experiences that leave a lasting impact on attendees. From high-tech innovations to low-tech creativity, the best strategies engage the senses, spark interaction, and make attendees an integral part of the experience.
- Engage all Five Senses – While augmented reality and other tech-driven solutions are becoming increasingly popular in creating immersive experiences, there’s something to be said for taking a low-tech approach. Designing an event that engages all five senses—sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell—creates a profound and memorable impact.
- Treat Your Event Like a Theatre Performance – Events aren’t just gatherings—they’re performances. Think of your event as a theatre to craft a narrative that draws attendees in and makes them feel like active participants rather than passive observers.
These strategies don’t just capture attention—they forge connections, inspire action, and leave lasting impressions. The key to successful events lies in thinking creatively, embracing storytelling, and focusing on what makes attendees feel truly immersed in the moment. Whether through innovative tech or thoughtful low-tech approaches, the possibilities are endless.
I’m feel proud to be in this industry and I can’t wait to continue to grow our experience for our clients as we move forward in 2025.
