Imagining and building the cities of the future

“The children are our future” and nowhere is it more true than the Future City Competition. Students from across the nation in 6th, 7th and 8th grades work together to imagine, design and build models of their future solutions to a citywide sustainability issue. In order to focus on the creativity and engineering achievements of the participants, DiscoverE enlisted Linder to oversee and execute the smooth sailing of both the Finals Competition and Awards Ceremony – and streamline the process for each year to come.  Students work as a team with an educator and engineer mentor to plan cities using SimCity™ software, research and write solutions to an engineering problem, build tabletop scale models with recycled materials, and present their ideas before judges at Regional Competitions in January each year.

In 2015, thirty-seven teams from across the country and one team from China flew in to Washington, DC to participate.  The Competition takes place over the course of four days, encompassing numerous rounds of rigorous judging and culminating in a final Awards Ceremony. Linder constructs and maintains an exciting, innovative, kid-friendly environment at the Capital Hilton Hotel and ensures the highest degree of safety protocol is maintained – so parents may rest assured knowing their burgeoning engineers are in good hands.  Leading up to the event, Linder communicates directly with teachers and mentors to guide them through registration, produce collateral, and manage merchandise. Through airtight production, stimulating programming, vital corporate partnerships, and old-fashioned fun, Linder and Future City create an experience that inspires a passion for engineering in the students that participate.

Project Management

DiscoverE has been working with Linder Global for 10+ years. First on our Discover Engineering Family Day (a one-day event that attracts up to 10,000 people each year) and now on our five-day Future City National Finals. Over the past two years the Linder team has helped us streamline our event planning process, identified event strengths and weaknesses, and has improved the national finals in both big ways and small. Working with our three amazing Linder colleagues is easy and rewarding. I can’t imagine hosting the Finals without them.
